I had an old bootable restore CD from a very old e machines computer I no longer have and thought for kicks I'd put windows 98 on my Parallels desktop on my Mac. I got a little lost during installation (the first comp I restored was XP, so I don't have much experience with 98.) I went to create a new virtual machine, selected DVD and windows 98. It brought up: MS Windows 98 Start Up Menu 1. Restore Windows 98 - will format hdd 2. Restore Windows 98 - will not format hdd 3.
Boot to DOS Prompt from CD rom 1 and 2 both give me an error and say my computer is not responding. With 3 I can get the prompt (A: ) but I can't remember how to get it to install it on my virtual machine. I tried setup.exe but it tells me it is bad or invalid.

You need a retail version (not another computer's bundled CD labeled for that brand of computer) of Windows 98 Second Edition. If it is not the retail disc, it won't work. If it is not Second Edition, it won't work. The rest of the details are in that user guide.
I hope you didn't buy this Parallels disc just to use it to put Windows 98 on your Mac. You could have bought a ten year old PC in a thrift shop for less money, and it would run Windows 98 like a charm––I should say, as well as possible. Tell us some more. Upload in Progress.
